Disclosure: this site reviews ElevenLabs and earns a commission if you sign up for it through our links. ElevenLabs is an AI voice platform and not a video editor, so it is the right fix for only some of the reasons below, and we say which.
Why people look past Descript
We pulled Descript's 50 most recent Trustpilot reviews and its 50 most recent G2 reviews on September 27, 2026. The two sets disagree. All 50 Trustpilot reviews, posted between February and September 2026, are unprompted, and they average 1.48. On G2 the average is 4.41, and 42 of 50 reviewers give four stars or more, mostly for transcript editing and the time it saves. The reasons for leaving below come from the critical reviews on both platforms.
Billing is the most common complaint on Trustpilot. Thirteen of the 50 reviews describe trouble cancelling, refunds refused or delayed, or charges people didn't expect, such as renewals after they thought they had cancelled.
“Once you become a customer, it is extremely difficult to cancel your subscription.”Kasper Nørgaard, Trustpilot, September 2026
AI credits come next. About 15 reviews say the Underlord assistant or other AI tools used up credits on edits that went wrong, or that credits ran out on ordinary work. A few G2 reviewers who like Descript also say they would rather pay a flat fee than credits.
“I’ve edited only three podcast episodes with little to no AI usage, and I’m already out of credits.”Kyle Kaplanis, Trustpilot, February 2026
About 10 reviews describe bugs, crashes, or an interface that makes simple edits slow, and the same complaint shows up among Descript's critical G2 reviews. Smaller groups object to features moving to pricier plans and to AI voice results, such as uneven accents across a generated presentation.
“You will waste hours in their menus and navigation trying to do the simplest things in the world, like adding a background or even selecting which screen to record.”J Lawrence, Trustpilot, August 2026

The 4 best Descript alternatives
ElevenLabs
If you use Descript for AI voice, dubbing, or transcriptsThe fit if what you use Descript for is the voice: voiceovers, a cloned voice, dubbing, or transcripts and captions. ElevenLabs has a 10,000+ voice library with speech in 70+ languages, and its Starter plan at $6 a month includes a commercial license, instant voice cloning, and dubbing. Descript's cheapest paid plan is $16 to $24. Its Scribe speech to text covers 90+ languages and can generate captions, at 330 credits per minute, so the 10,000-credit free plan covers about 30 minutes. On reviews the two are level: unprompted Trustpilot reviews average 1.52 for ElevenLabs (29) and 1.48 for Descript (50), and recent G2 reviews 4.4 (96) against 4.41 (50). ElevenLabs is not a video editor, so it won't replace Descript for cutting footage you filmed. Its own critical reviews also complain about credits running out and billing disputes, so it won't fix those problems.
Full ElevenLabs vs Descript comparison →Riverside
For podcasters who record remote guestsRecords remote guests on separate audio and video tracks and edits by transcript, with filler-word and silence removal on its Pro plan. Pro is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed annually ($288), with a 14-day free trial. The free plan includes 2 hours of multi-track recording (one-off), 720p video, and a Riverside watermark. Choose it if you mainly used Descript's Rooms and transcript editing for a podcast. We have not pulled Riverside's reviews, so we make no claim about its support or billing.
Adobe Premiere
For a full timeline editor that still edits by transcriptPremiere's Text-Based Editing transcribes a clip, lets you cut it from the transcript, and detects filler words and pauses to delete in bulk. It suits people who left Descript over its timeline, layers, or bugs and want a professional editor. Expect more to learn than Descript. Premiere alone is US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, and the 7-day free trial converts to a paid membership unless you cancel first.
CapCut
For simple edits on a free planTwo of the Descript reviewers we read name CapCut as what they should have used. The free Standard plan covers cutting, trimming, merging, splitting, filters, transitions, and basic audio editing. The auto caption generator and noise reduction are Pro features, which CapCut's own guide lists at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year in the US, with prices varying by region and platform. It has no transcript-based editing like Descript's.
When to stay with Descript
If you record yourself and edit the result, Descript keeps recording, transcript editing, audio cleanup, and fixes in your own cloned voice in one app, and that combination is what its fans praise. Its recent G2 reviews average 4.41, and some of its critical Trustpilot reviewers say they still use it. If credits are your only complaint, compare the Creator and Business allowances first, since annual billing saves up to 35% according to Descript's pricing page.
“I LOVE the editing via text feature, eye contact feature, removing filler, editing pauses (via the script) and copy and paste features for editing.”Georgie Snape, Trustpilot, April 2026
If the voice is the part you care about, try ElevenLabs. You can test its voices, cloning, and dubbing on the free plan, and read its full review record, critical reviews included, before you pay.
How we sourced this: on September 27, 2026 we pulled the 50 most recent Descript reviews on Trustpilot (February 23 to September 25, 2026) and the 50 most recent on G2 (April 28 to September 14, 2026). Trustpilot labels each review as invited by the company or unprompted; all 50 Descript reviews were unprompted. ElevenLabs figures come from the same-day pull: 29 unprompted and 21 invited Trustpilot reviews, and 96 G2 reviews. Reason counts are our own reading of the reviews, and quotes are verbatim. Pricing and features come from each company's own pages on the same date. We did not pull reviews for Riverside, Adobe Premiere, or CapCut.
