ElevenLabs vs Descript: AI voice generator or AI video editor?
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · 11Reviews · Updated September 27, 2026
These two get compared because both do AI voice, but they are built for different jobs. Descript is an audio and video editor: you record or upload footage, it transcribes it, and you edit the video by editing the text. Its AI voice, the Overdub cloning model and the Regenerate tool, sits inside that editor, mostly to fix a word or add a line in your own voice.
ElevenLabs is a voice platform. It has a library of 10,000+ voices, speech in 70+ languages, instant and professional voice cloning, dubbing, and transcription, with plans from $6 a month. Pick ElevenLabs when the voice is the product: narration, audiobooks, dubbing, or a voice agent. Pick Descript when you record yourself and need to cut podcasts, tutorials, or talking-head video. On reviews the two are level like for like.

ElevenLabs vs Descript: generating a voice or editing a recording
The first question is where your audio comes from. If you speak into a microphone or camera, Descript is built around that recording. It transcribes it in 25 languages, and deleting words in the transcript cuts them from the video. It also removes filler words, cleans audio with Studio Sound, records your screen, and records remote guests in Rooms. Descript's G2 reviewers mostly praise that editing workflow.
“Filler word removal is easily one of the best features to highlight.”Accounts E., G2, July 2026
If the voice itself is what you are making, ElevenLabs starts from text. You pick or clone a voice, generate the speech, and export it or use it in Studio, where ElevenLabs says you can combine voice, music, sound effects, captions, and video. It does not advertise transcript editing of recorded footage, filler-word removal, or guest recording, so it won't replace an editor for people who film themselves.
AI voice in ElevenLabs and Descript: range and limits
Descript's voice tools are there to serve the edit. Regenerate replaces a word or phrase in your own cloned voice, and Video Regenerate also changes your mouth movements to match. Descript describes it as best for short corrections and says it isn't built to generate whole new clips. Its pricing page adds that once you pass the plan's Regenerate limit, you hear “jibber” “jabber” in the generated speech. Some reviewers find the feature uneven.
“I have not found the "regeneration" feature as helpful as I would like it to be.”Jacky P., G2, August 2026
ElevenLabs is the broader voice tool, with a 10,000+ voice library, speech in 70+ languages, Eleven v3 audio tags such as [whispers] to direct delivery, and dubbing from the $6 Starter plan. Descript lists 20+ stock voices in 20+ languages, and its full translate-and-dub feature is on the Business plan ($50 to $65 a month). For narration, audiobooks, multilingual versions, or voices that aren't yours, ElevenLabs covers more.
ElevenLabs vs Descript pricing: credits against media hours
For a commercial voiceover, ElevenLabs costs less to start: $6 a month on Starter against $16 to $24 on Descript Hobbyist. Descript's price includes the editor, though, so compare it with what you would otherwise pay for editing software. Both meter AI use. ElevenLabs draws every product from one monthly credit pool, and text to speech costs about one credit per character. Descript counts media hours for uploads and recordings plus AI credits for tools like Underlord, Studio Sound, and Eye Contact. Credits running out is a leading complaint in both products' reviews, so estimate your monthly volume before choosing a tier.
What ElevenLabs and Descript reviews say, compared like for like
Trustpilot marks each review as invited by the company or unprompted, and invited reviews score higher for every company we track that has both kinds, so we compare the groups separately. In our September 27, 2026 pull, unprompted reviews average 1.52 for ElevenLabs (29 reviews) and 1.48 for Descript (50 reviews, February to September 2026). That gap is too small to call a win. Descript's 50 most recent reviews include no invited ones, so there is no invited score to set against ElevenLabs' 4.95 (21 reviews). On G2, recent reviews average 4.4 for ElevenLabs (96) and 4.41 for Descript (50), another tie, and Descript's overall G2 score of 4.6 is slightly above ElevenLabs' 4.5. The complaints overlap too: Descript's unprompted reviewers describe hard cancellations, unexpected charges, and AI credits spent on edits that went wrong, while ElevenLabs' describe credits running out and billing disputes.
Where Descript wins
- Editing recorded audio and video by editing the transcript, which ElevenLabs does not offer
- Editing tools built around your own footage: filler-word removal, Studio Sound, Eye Contact, Green Screen, and automatic multicam
- Screen recording and remote guest recording (Rooms) in the same app
- Regenerate can fix a flubbed word in your own voice and match your mouth movements on video
- The free plan states no credit card is needed, and it includes the editor
- A slightly higher overall G2 score (4.6 against 4.5)

Only partly. ElevenLabs Studio combines voice, music, sound effects, captions, and video into finished assets. If you record yourself on camera and need to cut the footage, Descript or another editor is the right tool.
Do I need both ElevenLabs and Descript?+
Some creators will. A common split is generating narration or dubbed audio in ElevenLabs and cutting the video in an editor such as Descript. If you only need voiceovers, ElevenLabs alone covers it.
