Is ElevenLabs legit? What we could verify, and what users complain about
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · 11Reviews · Updated September 27, 2026 · Company facts from elevenlabs.io and TechCrunch; ratings and reviews pulled September 27, 2026
Yes, ElevenLabs is a legitimate company, and the product does what it says. The doubts people search for come from its Trustpilot page, where billing disputes, refused refunds, and blocked free accounts pull the score down to 3.0. Below is what we could check against the company's own pages and named sources, followed by the complaints, quoted as written.
ElevenLabs company facts we could verify
ElevenLabs was founded in 2022 by Mati Staniszewski and Piotr Dąbkowski, who are named as co-founders on its safety page. Its terms of service are a contract with Eleven Labs Inc. and give a mailing address at 169 Madison Ave in New York. A June 2026 announcement on its site, about a partnership with the UK Government, describes an expanding London HQ.
On funding, TechCrunch reported on February 4, 2026 that ElevenLabs raised $500 million in a round led by Sequoia Capital at an $11 billion valuation, bringing its total raised to more than $781 million. Andreessen Horowitz and ICONIQ also invested.
The rest comes from ElevenLabs itself, so read it as the company's claims. Its enterprise page says 10,000+ businesses use it, and its safety page says millions of individuals do. Its news page lists a multi-year agreement with Universal Music Group (September 10, 2026).
ElevenLabs security and compliance claims
ElevenLabs' product pages list these certifications and commitments. We have not audited any of them; the company points to compliance.elevenlabs.io for the full overview.
- SOC 2 Type II certified
- ISO 27001 certified
- PCI DSS Level 1 certified
- GDPR compliant
- HIPAA-eligible for enterprise customers, when a Business Associate Agreement is in place and Zero Retention Mode is on
It also says text input is not used to train its models without consent, and that enterprise customers can switch on Zero Retention Mode for eligible services. On misuse, the safety page describes blocking the cloning of celebrity and other high-risk voices, requiring verification before Professional Voice Cloning, and a public AI Speech Classifier that checks whether a clip was made with ElevenLabs.
ElevenLabs ratings on six review platforms
| Compared on | Rating and count |
|---|---|
| G2 | 4.5 from 1,140 reviews |
| Capterra | 4.7 from 25 reviews |
| Product Hunt | 4.9 from 210 reviews |
| App Store (iOS) | 4.8 from 21,005 ratings |
| Google Play | 4.6 from 230,000+ ratings |
| Trustpilot | 3.0 from 1,163 reviews |
Figures checked against each company's published pages and review-platform listings as of September 27, 2026. “Not published” means the company does not publish that figure.
Why ElevenLabs scores 3.0 on Trustpilot
Five platforms put ElevenLabs between 4.5 and 4.9, and Trustpilot gives it 3.0. The gap comes from who writes the reviews. Trustpilot labels each review as invited (the company sent a review link) or unprompted. In our pull of the 50 most recent ElevenLabs reviews on September 27, 2026, the 21 invited reviews averaged 4.95 and the 29 unprompted reviews averaged 1.52. Invited reviewers tend to be people whose support ticket just went well. Unprompted reviewers tend to be people with a billing or account problem. Both groups are real customers, so we read both. The unprompted complaints fall into three groups.
Charges after a trial or a cancellation
The angriest reviews describe being charged after trying to stop a trial or a subscription. Some of these came through the iOS app, where Apple handles the billing, and the reviewer ended up bounced between the two companies.
“I took a 3 day trial. On day 2 decided it wasn't for me and tried to downgrade.”Jaydubs, Trustpilot, September 2026
“I canceled my membership just before the free trial ended, the day they listed as the last day to cancel before being charged. I was charged anyway, after canceling.”jayrome washinngton 3, App Store, August 2026
ElevenLabs' pricing FAQ says you can cancel at any time, the plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, and the account then drops to the Free plan.
“Unusual activity” blocks on free accounts
Free users on the app stores and Trustpilot report that generation stopped with a message about unusual activity, a VPN or proxy, or multiple free accounts, followed by a prompt to upgrade. The reviewers say they did none of those things.
“I was trying to use the text to speech feature, but then it said unusual activity detected. It said I was using a VPN or proxy or made multiple free accounts, which I didn’t.”11labshater, App Store, August 2026
“Tried to use the initial free offering of 10,000 credits, but they prevent access claiming that the IP is being used for multiple requests.”John Peare, Trustpilot, August 2026
“My Free Tier access has been disabled because unusual activity was detected on my account.”Anuj Verma, Google Play, August 2026
ElevenLabs does not publish the rules behind these blocks. Its safety page says it vets customers at sign up and admits that its safeguards “may mistakenly block good actors.” Its terms also require a personal email address for non-commercial use.
Credits that ran out or disappeared, and refused refunds
Credits drive the third group. Some reviewers burned a month of credits on a few failed generations. Others lost banked credits, which follows from the rollover rule: unused credits carry over for up to two months while a paid plan stays active, and expire on a downgrade or cancellation.
“I paid month after month, accumulated around 100,000 credits, and then discovered that those credits were gone.”Mohamed H., Trustpilot, September 2026
“ElevenLabs initially refused the refund because I had used some of the features.”Max, Trustpilot, August 2026
The terms say “All sales are final” and that refunds are at ElevenLabs' discretion. Its help center is more specific: a refund is possible if you ask within 14 days of payment and haven't used any credits in that period (see our refund and cancellation guide). The same Trustpilot pull includes reviewers who did get credits back after contacting support, so outcomes vary by case.
What ElevenLabs users praise
Complaints about the voices themselves are less common. Across G2, Capterra, and the invited Trustpilot reviews, people praise how natural the speech sounds and, when a ticket goes well, the support staff.
“The voices sound remarkably natural, expressive, and realistic, with excellent pronunciation and emotional range.”albcar, Trustpilot, September 2026
“They were patient, professional, and took the time to properly investigate the problem until everything was resolved.”Sofoklis Sofokleous, Trustpilot, September 2026
Both of those are invited Trustpilot reviews, which is why we show them next to the unprompted ones above. You can read the rest on our Trustpilot reviews page and G2 reviews page.
How to use ElevenLabs without the common problems
- Start on the Free plan ($0, 10,000 credits a month) and test the exact voice and script length you need before you pay.
- If you start a trial, cancel from the same place you subscribed. App Store purchases are billed by Apple, so check the subscription in your Apple settings too.
- Don't bank credits for months. Rollover stops at two months, and cancelling or downgrading forfeits unused paid credits at the end of the cycle.
- Generate in short sections. Every generation request uses credits, so a bad take on a short paragraph costs less than one on a whole script.
- Sign up for free use with a personal email address, as the terms require for non-commercial use.

Is ElevenLabs a real company?+
Yes. Its terms of service are a contract with Eleven Labs Inc., with a mailing address in New York, and its own announcements refer to a London HQ. It was founded in 2022 by Mati Staniszewski and Piotr Dąbkowski. In February 2026 TechCrunch reported a $500 million round led by Sequoia at an $11 billion valuation, with more than $781 million raised in total.
Is ElevenLabs safe to use?+
ElevenLabs says it is SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and PCI DSS Level 1 certified and GDPR compliant, with HIPAA-eligible setups for enterprise customers who sign a BAA and turn on Zero Retention Mode. It also says your text input is not used to train its models without your consent. Those are the company's own claims; its compliance overview is at compliance.elevenlabs.io.
Why does ElevenLabs have a low Trustpilot rating?+
Trustpilot shows 3.0 from 1,163 reviews as of September 27, 2026, while G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, and both app stores sit between 4.5 and 4.9. In our pull of the latest 50 Trustpilot reviews, the 21 invited reviews averaged 4.95 and the 29 unprompted ones averaged 1.52. The unprompted complaints are mostly about billing, cancellations, refunds, credits running out, and account blocks.
Why was my free ElevenLabs account blocked for unusual activity?+
App Store, Google Play, and Trustpilot reviewers describe free-tier access being switched off with a message about unusual activity, a VPN or proxy, or multiple free accounts, and a prompt to upgrade. ElevenLabs' safety page says it vets customers at sign up and that its safeguards can mistakenly block legitimate users. If it happens to you, contact support from the account and ask for a review.
Does ElevenLabs give refunds?+
Its terms say all sales are final and that refunds are at its sole discretion, but its help center says you are eligible if you ask within 14 days of payment and no credits were used in that period. Reviewers report both outcomes: some got credits refunded after a support ticket, others were refused because they had already used the service. If you cancel, the plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, then drops to Free, and unused paid credits expire. Details on our refund and cancellation page.
Is ElevenLabs a scam?+
No. The product works as described for most people who review it, and the company is venture-funded and publishes its terms and pricing. The people who call it a scam are usually describing a charge after a trial or cancellation, a refused refund, or a blocked free account. Those are real problems worth planning around, and they are service complaints about a legitimate business.
